Strokes Gained calculator

Enter a hole exactly as you would in the app: pick your level and the par, then each shot from where the ball lies, starting with the tee shot and the hole length, until you hole out. You get Strokes Gained for every shot, the hole total, and a split into off the tee, approach, around the green and putting. No sign-up. New to the method? The Strokes Gained explainer is two minutes.

How to read the breakdown

  • Before and After are the expected strokes to hole out from where the shot started and where it finished, for a golfer at your level.
  • SG for a shot is Before minus After minus one. Positive means the shot left you better placed than average for your level.
  • The hole total is the sum of every shot. It also equals the expected strokes from the tee minus the score you took, which is a good way to check it.
  • Off the tee is the first shot on a par 4 or 5. Approach is any shot into the green from outside 30 yards, including par 3 tee shots. Around the green is anything inside 30 yards that is not a putt. Putting is putting.
  • Try a par 4: Tee 400, Fairway 150, Green 25, Green 3, then press the green button. For a 10 to 14 handicap that par comes out at about plus 0.84.

Common questions

How does the Strokes Gained calculator work?

Every spot on the course has an expected number of strokes to hole out for a golfer at a given level. For each shot the calculator takes the expected strokes from where it started, subtracts the expected strokes from where it finished, and subtracts one for the shot itself. It does that for every shot on the hole, adds them up, and groups them by category. A positive number means better than average for your level.

Where do the expected strokes numbers come from?

They are baselines built on the research behind Strokes Gained, adjusted for handicap bands so a 15 handicap is compared with other 15 handicaps rather than with tour players. They are the same baselines TM Stats uses to score full rounds.

What counts as a good Strokes Gained number for one shot?

Most ordinary shots sit between about minus 0.5 and plus 0.5. A tee shot into the trees or a chunked wedge can cost a full stroke or more, and a well struck approach to a close range can gain more than one at mid-handicap level. A holed putt from 15 feet gains about 0.6. Over a round, the useful figure is the total by category, which is what the app gives you.

Is this calculator free?

Yes, and it needs no sign-up. If you want Strokes Gained for every shot across a whole round, and split into the four categories, TM Stats does that from your phone and the first five rounds are free.
